Future postgraduate students

This page contains information for students interested in studying for a higher degree by research in synchrotron science.

Generally, students studying the following subjects will have suitable backgrounds to pursue research in the area of synchrotron science: anatomy, biology, biomedical science, chemistry, engineering, formulation science, medical imaging and radiation sciences, pharmacy and physics.

Research can be conducted within the MCSS or within the Monash Faculties of Engineering, Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Pharmacy or Science.

Scholarships offered by MCSS in 2008

The MCSS invites applicants for postgraduate study leading to a PhD, to be undertaken at Monash University. MCSS is a cross faculty entity under the portfolio of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, which fosters synchrotron related research across the university. Successful candidates will undertake projects involving significant use of a synchrotron technique or the development of supporting platform technologies, and will be enrolled through an appropriate academic unit of the university. In particular, the MCSS, through and in collaboration with the School of Physics, is a major contributor to the Cooperative Research Centre in Biomedical Imaging Development and the ARC Centre of Excellence in Coherent X-ray Science.

Applicants should have a strong background in one of the physical sciences, biological/biomedical sciences, mathematics, or engineering disciplines, and should have completed a four year undergraduate degree at H1 level, or equivalent. Applicants should hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship, or Australian permanent residency. A number of scholarships for living expenses valued at $20,000 to $28,000 p.a. are available to eligible applicants to commence immediately. Applicants should discuss potential projects from the lists above with the supervisors given and/or seek the support of a supervisor for an alternative project before submitting an application form.
