Projects Overview

Generic Data Acquisition System (GDAQ1)

Development of a high-performance data acquisition card for 64-bit PCI bus with on-board FPGA processor and 6 channels of hardware configurable analog inputs. Supported data transfer and control protocols include PCI, RS-232, Ethernet and USB.

Typical applications:

  • Delay-readout based X-ray imaging system with 100ps resolution dual time to digital converters for gas proportional detectors.
  • Acquisition and signal analyser system for a HpGe strip detector. The outputs include x,y,z,E and t information.
  • A Pixel detector readout and control system.
  • A multi-parameter, Multi-Channel Analyser (MCA).
  • Real time fast analogue data acquisition, digital signal processing and control for Synchrotron applications and high-energy physics

The board will be supported by a device driver, software and documentation. Hardware to capture and store data is currently being documented. A user GUI called Jetpack provides user-friendly access to control and display acquired data.

COE-ARC beamline end-station development

This project aims to develop a beamline end-station suitable for protein crystallography that can be readily adapted into the existing suite of beamlines currently under construction at the Australian Synchrotron.

ARC (Pilatus) detector commissioning

The Pilatus detector is being commissioned and tested for potential applications at the Australian Synchrotron.

Multi Wire Proportional Chamber (MWPC) development for SAXS/WAXS

This 20*20cm area detector is being developed to upgrade the SAXS/WAXS system at Monash Uni/CSIRO. Future developments will include a high rate option.

Other detector developments currently under way

Gas-based X-ray detector using thick Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs).

3D readout of gas detectors (under construction).
